The Necklace
(for Patricia, on our 20th)
I've never lived for more than love
And beauty; they are the marrow
Of my days. With beauty as my needle
And love my endless spool of thread,
I string my days together, bead by bead.
The brilliant ones and silky pearls
Of course, are easy. But even through days
As fogged as beach glass, rough
As horn, impenetrable as onyx,
Beauty finds its way, and love follows.
You, my dear, should know by now
You are my beauty, my love,
My marrow. Though you may have heard me
Fretting to find that needle
On days of fog, or cursing my existence
When fumbling through a tunnel of horn
Or onyx, I love the string we've made.
And I see, in the eye of everything,
When I lift our effort to the light
(And I hope that you agree)
We've had our share and more
Of brilliances, of pearls.
