Mary Murray (nee Lavin), born on August 8, 1947, in Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of the late James and Loretta Lavin and was predeceased by her devoted husband, Kevin. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and community.
Mary is survived by her three loving sons, Sean (Jennifer), Michael (Kealy), and Andrew (Erin), who meant the world to her. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Catherine, Declan, Madeline, Callum, Connor, Silas, Seamus, and Quinn. Mary was a dear sister to Patti Ryan (Jack), Loretta Rae (Mike), and Gerry Lavin (Jeanne), and a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Chestnut Hill College, Mary dedicated her career to helping others as a social worker, teacher, and later, as an assistant to Kevin in his financial planning practice. But her most treasured role was being a mother and grandmother, always supporting her children and grandchildren, whether from near or afar.
Mary and Kevin cherished their trips to California and Texas to visit their sons and grandchildren, especially when they could attend the grandkids' games and events. Family time was always a priority for Mary, and some of her most joyful memories were the summer trips to Cape Cod, where friends and family were always welcome. These gatherings were filled with love, laughter, and an open door to anyone who wanted to join.
Her warmth extended to her home in Chestnut Hill, where the back door was literally always open to family, friends, and neighbors. Mary found great joy in welcoming loved ones into her home, creating an atmosphere of love, hospitality, and care.
A devoted member of St. Vincent's Parish in Germantown, Mary lived a life rooted in faith and community. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A funeral mass and celebration of life will be held at St. Vincent’s Parish in Germantown, 109 E. Price Street, Philadelphia, PA on December 27th, 2024 at 11AM. A visitation will be held from from 9:30-11AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent’s in Mary’s Honor.
