Lorraine Florence (nee Witcoskie) Schmidt passed away peacefully in her Flourtown home on April 17, 2020, surrounded by her family. She was 90 years old. Lorraine lived in her Flourtown home, where she lovingly raised her five children and welcomed her adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren, for over 62 years. Family and friends affectionately refer to the Schmidt home as “the compound”, and Lorraine was its steadfast matriarch. Lorraine was born and raised in Shamokin, PA. She was a twin, and one of 13 children. Upon graduation from Shamokin Area High School, where she played competitive basketball, she worked as a seamstress for Arrow Co. At 26, she met the love of her life, Paul Schmidt, and began a 53-year marriage that lasted until his death in 2008. Lorraine was an energetic homemaker whose life revolved around her family, home, cooking, gardening, church and caring for others. She was a talented craftsperson who crocheted beautiful afghans and lovely ceramic pieces as gifts for every occasion. She was also a baker who baked hundreds of Christmas cookies each year—mostly as gifts for grateful friends and family. When her children were grown, she enjoyed working part-time at Scottie’s Ice Cream and Kmart, in Flourtown. Lorraine was a member of St. Genevieve Catholic Church for over 60 years. She is survived by: her children, Sally Schmidt, Beth Schmidt, Paula Schmidt, Lorraine Acierno and her husband, Richard, Paul “Butch” Schmidt and his wife, Deborah; eight grandchildren: Amanda, Lauren, Kimmy, Brittany, Brooke, Richie, P.J. and Jessica; and five great-grandchildren: Cole, Teagan, Kinley, Bree and Jay. Lorraine is being interred at a private service at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to Keystone Hospice, 8765 Stenton Avenue, Wyndmoor, PA, 19038 or keystonecare.com.
