Elsa Varela Bosca

October 22, 1932 — December 22, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elsa Varella Bosca, affectionately known by many as "Nonna." Born on October 22, 1932, in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay, Elsa departed this world on December 22, 2024, in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a legacy rich in stories and laughter.

Elsa was a woman of remarkable vibrancy, balancing an outward politeness with a delightful inner sass. Her essence shone through her kindness, honesty, and humor. A true songbird at heart, she embraced music passionately, often singing softly throughout the day or sharing traditional Portuguese songs that her grandmother sang to her. To Elsa, beauty could be found in every aspect of life, as evidenced by her frequent use of the word “beautiful” to describe people and objects alike.

Elsa was a masterful storyteller. Her memory was astounding, allowing her to recite not only events but also the nuances that made them special—specific accents, facial expressions, and the heartfelt details that brought her stories to life. Though her tales began innocuously, they would always culminate in laughter, showcasing her extensive repertoire of jokes and the joy she found in sharing them.

In her loving embrace of family and friends, Elsa cultivated many beautiful relationships. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren—Antonio, Bridget, Deejay, Isabelle, Elizabeth, and William. She sustained many beautiful relationships with friends and spent lots of time catching up with them on the phone. Elsa loved to take walks, spend time outside, and invite friends over. She was a brilliant host and her home became a community space for countless gatherings.

A proud accomplishment in her life was her trilingual capability; Elsa often expressed her delight at the thought of conversing with the Pope in three languages. Additionally, she was a trained seamstress, working for the esteemed Dorothy Bullitt in Chestnut Hill, Geneva Shops in Flourtown, and Quimby’s Tailor Shop in Germantown. Her craft allowed her to embellish the lives of many, further exemplifying her dedication and artistry.

Elsa's presence carved a path of love and laughter that will be missed dearly by all who knew her. To celebrate her life, the viewing will be held on December 31, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a Mass from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, both taking place at St. Genevieve Church located at 1225 Bethlehem Pike, Flourtown, Pennsylvania, 19031.

She leaves behind her beloved family: her husband, Pietro Bosca; her sons, Louis Bosca and Franco Bosca; her daughters-in-law, Candi Root and Thea Bosca; and her cherished grandchildren.

As we bid farewell to Elsa, let us remember her life as a tapestry richly woven with stories, humor, and a genuine love for those around her. May her spirit continue to inspire us to find beauty in all things and to cherish every moment, as she so beautifully demonstrated throughout her life.
