Christopher Joseph Larkin, 68, born October 11, 1955, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Christopher was the beloved husband of Mary Ellen Larkin (née Dorko) for 18 years, most of where they resided in Flourtown, PA. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph T. Larkin, Jr. and the late Mary Theresa Larkin (nee McHugh). Christopher is survived by his son, Brian R. Larkin (Alexa Verme), his daughter Vanessa E. Larkin (George Shackil), and brothers Stephen J. Larkin, Michael J. Larkin, Timothy J. Larkin, and Patrick J. Larkin. Chris is also survived by his grandson, Miles Alexander Larkin. Christopher attended St. Margaret Mary elementary school and Holy Name High School in Reading, PA.
After graduating high school, Chris spent a gap year working numerous employment positions in the Reading area and traveled extensively throughout Europe in his backpacking / youth hostel adventures. He enjoyed living abroad for a period in Amsterdam, where he was employed by the Sony Corporation. Upon his return to the USA, Chris completed an associate degree from the Reading Area Community College in business. He then pursued studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, in the fields of education, and where he received a BA degree in Spanish and South American history and politics.
Chris had immensely enjoyed residing for three years in Barcelona, Spain, where he was employed by the then, SMS corporation (now Seimens) in the development of hospital computer information systems. Chris’ career continued to feature his occupation in various forms of information technology development, with the majority of emphasis in the realm of IT security. He was employed with the Philadelphia St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Cendant Mortgage and PHH corporations in the capacities of technician, Asst. Director and Directorship positions, respectively, for IT Security. Chris was a loving, devoted husband, father, son, and brother; his family remained central to his life. Chris was a lifelong, deeply devoted Roman Catholic, who enjoyed the practicing of his faith and his membership in the Knights of Columbus.
Chris' favorite pastimes included various physical fitness forms: running, weight training, Kung Fu (achieving brown belt level), and cycling. During the height of his cycling years, he would often clock 60-100 miles per week with his racing bike. Chris had a lifelong love of education, with a wide range of reading interests; particularly history, religion, sports, and politics. Chris thoroughly enjoyed being a spectator for a wide variety of sports and was well versed in their rules of play and the prominent professional athletes. Chris shared this pastime with his wife, Mary Ellen, teaching her the many rules and nuances of sports.
He will be most remembered for his intelligent mind and wit, and his ready smile and laugh. Chris will be most deeply missed for his warm, welcoming, and loving heart.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 1st at St. Genevieve Roman Catholic Church, Flourtown, PA. Visitation time will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 am, followed by a 10:00 am liturgy. A luncheon will follow at Flourtown Country Club. Cemetery interment will be held privately, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to St. Genevieve church, Flourtown PA, and to Temple University Office of Student Life, Philadelphia, PA.
