Barry was born in Bristol, England. He moved to Philadelphia in 1981 to marry his wife of 43 years, Mary Ryan, whom he met in Sea Isle City through mutual friends. He is survived by his wife, his sister, Angela Ingram, and brother David, nephew Kevin, niece Tracy Head and their sons. He is also survived by his wife’s family who loved him as a brother: Bill, Jim, Tom and Eileen Ryan and Patrice Sas, their spouses and daughters.
Everyone who knew Barry loved him. He loved English soccer, watching Penn State football with Paul and Jan or Eagles games with the Sas’s, Ryan family get-togethers, visiting his sister in Cornwall, Friday “happy hours” with the Krzywicki’s, fixing everything around his house, working in his garage and yard, craft beers and potatoes in any form.
Barry worked on the Concorde when it was first built, and in a variety of home remodeling trades in England and the U.S. until he retired. Then he put his many skills to use helping family and friends.
Barry was diagnosed with kidney failure as a young man and had his first kidney transplant in England in 1973. When it failed 27 years later, his brother gave him another, which lasted 24 years. Organ transplants take their toll, but Barry never complained and was a real trooper dealing with all the health challenges he faced over many years. Organ donation gave Barry 51 years of life. His final weeks were difficult but he never lost his sense of humor and appreciated everyone who helped him. He died peacefully at Keystone House hospice in Wyndmoor, where he received excellent care from a very special group of people.
Donations can be made in Barry’s name to: Keystone House Hospice, 8765 Stenton Avenue, Wyndmoor, PA 19038.
