Barbara A. Roat of Philadelphia passed away on June 19, 2023, at Chandler Hall Hospice in Newtown. She was 83 years old.
Born in Germantown to the late Leonard and Mary Cavanaugh, Barbara was a resident of Northeast Philadelphia for the past 50 years.
She dedicated her life to her late husband of 55 years, John J. Roat, and to raising her two children, Christopher and Maureen. Though she worked outside the home as well, her true calling was as a homemaker. She relished opportunities to bring everyone together for birthdays, graduations, and holidays. Anyone who had the chance to visit during Christmas – her favorite holiday – entered a winter wonderland of lovingly displayed decorations.
She was a devout Catholic and, in her later years, she spent much of her time praying for others – especially for the Philadelphia Phillies. In her final days, she was surrounded by her family and watched the baseball team that she loved sweep the Oakland A’s.
Barbara is survived by her children Christopher (Jean) and Maureen (Jonathan); her grandchildren Lily and Justin (Alexis); one sister, Susan Cavanaugh; her sister-in-law Mary Burns (Francis); and, nephews Brian (Anne) and Kevin (Cindy). A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Albert the Great Church, 212 Welsh Road, Huntington Valley, PA 19006. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing at 9:30 a.m. at the Church. Interment to follow at Washington Crossing Cemetery on Friday, June 30th at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, 160 E. Erie Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19134.
